Reaching the Temple
The Viralimalai Murugan Temple is located about 28 kilometers from Trichy, nestled atop the Viralimalai hillock. You can reach the temple by bus from Trichy, Pudukottai, or Manapparai. If you're coming by car, it's a fairly easy drive from Trichy.
Climbing the Hill
Prepare to climb around 207 steps to reach the temple on the hilltop. There are rest pavilions (mandapas) along the way for you to catch your breath and enjoy the scenery.
Temple Grounds
The temple complex is surrounded by thick vegetation and orchards, particularly Kura trees. Keep an eye out for the abundant peacocks and squirrels that call the temple grounds home. There's a statue depicting Kashyapa and Narada Muni, along with sculptures of Lord Murugan and the poet Arunagirinathar adorning the pillars. A water tank called Saravana Poigai sits at the foot of the hills. On the eastern side, you'll find a shrine dedicated to the goddess Maikannudaiyal.
The Temple
The temple itself is dedicated to Lord Murugan, who is depicted seated on a peacock. Pooja rituals are performed six times daily. The views from the temple, especially considering the climb you just made, are said to be quite breathtaking.
Legends and Significance
The temple is associated with the legend of Saint Arunagirinathar, a 15th-century Tamil poet who visited and sang praises of Lord Murugan here. The temple is especially significant for devotees of Lord Murugan (also known as Subrahmanya).
