The Umananda Temple, also known as the Umananda Devaloi, is a Shiva temple located on the Peacock Island in the middle of the Brahmaputra River, opposite the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup or the Kachari Ghat in Guwahati, Assam, India. It is known for being the smallest inhabited riverine island in the world.
The temple was built in 1694 CE by Borphukan Garhganya Handique on the orders of King Gadadhar Singha, one of the strongest rulers of the Ahom dynasty. The temple was however damaged by an earthquake in 1897 and later reconstructed by a rich local merchant.
Getting There
The only way to reach the temple is by taking a ferry or motor launch from the Umananda Ghat, which is located between the State Bank of India and the Ashoka Hotel in Guwahati. Ferries run regularly throughout the day, and the journey to the island takes about 10 minutes.
Once you get to the island, there is a short climb of about 100 steps to reach the temple.
Things to Do
The main attraction of the island is the Umananda Temple itself. The temple is a beautiful example of Ahom architecture and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. There are a number of interesting sculptures and carvings to see inside the temple, including an Achaturbhuja stone female figure, rock-cut figures of Ganesha, and a cave.

Festivals
The most important festival celebrated at the Umananda Temple is the Shiva Chaturdashi, which is celebrated annually. During this festival, the temple is decorated with flowers and lights, and there are a number of special pujas and ceremonies held.
Another important festival is Mahashivaratri, which is celebrated all over India. During this festival, devotees visit the temple to offer prayers to Lord Shiva.
