Tham Khao Luang, also spelled Tham Khao Luang, is a cave temple complex nestled on a small hill roughly five kilometers outside of Phetchaburi city center, Thailand. Though not a massive climb, you can either walk or take a car up to the base of the hill. There, you'll be greeted by a scenic cable car ride or a long set of stairs that lead up to the cave's entrance.
The most captivating aspect of Tham Khao Luang is its religious significance and natural beauty. Believed to have been a meditation site for centuries, the cave is adorned with Buddha images throughout its chambers. The most dramatic feature, however, is the way sunlight filters through a natural opening in the cave ceiling, illuminating the interior with a magical glow. This phenomenon is best witnessed between 9 am and noon, though it can vary depending on cloud cover.
Tham Khao Luang isn't just a beautiful cave temple; it's also steeped in history. King Rama IV, who once resided as a monk, was particularly fond of this cave. In fact, he's believed to have built the stone gate that separates the main chamber from the others, supposedly as a security measure for a couple who once lived inside.
While exploring the cave, keep an eye out for the cheeky monkeys that frequent the area. Though they won't venture inside, they may try to snatch treats from unsuspecting visitors!
