The church has an interesting backstory. St. Francis Xavier, who was fondly called 'Valiya Pandaram' by the locals, is said to have played a key role in preventing an invasion. As a token of gratitude, the king gifted him a plot of land where a congregation already existed. This eventually became the St. Xavier Church, constructed next to the already existing Church of St. Mary.
The church underwent a redesign in 1865 and has grown in stature over the years. In 1930, it was elevated to the status of a Cathedral. A pinnacle to honor St. Francis Xavier was built in 1942, and a cave for St. Mary and a small hallowed place for St. Ignatius were also constructed within the church premises.
