St. Aloysius Chapel is a Catholic chapel in Mangalore in the state of Karnataka in southwest India. The Chapel is situated in the heart of the city on the Lighthouse Hill. It was built by Jesuit Missionaries in 1880 and its interiors painted by the Italian Jesuit Antonio Moscheni in 1899, during the Mangalore Mission in 1878.
The chapel is known for its resemblance to the Sistine Chapel in Rome, but on a smaller scale. The interiors of the chapel are adorned with beautiful frescoes and paintings depicting the life of St. Aloysius Gonzaga, a wealthy Italian saint who renounced his wealth to become a Jesuit missionary. The most striking feature of the chapel is the ceiling, which is covered in a series of murals depicting scenes from the life of Christ.
The St. Aloysius Chapel is a popular tourist destination and a place of worship for the local Catholic community. It is open to visitors from 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM and 2:30 PM to 5:00 PM on all days. There are free guided tours conducted every 30 minutes.
