Phowintaung, also known as Hpowindaung, Powintaung, or Po Win Taung, is a Buddhist cave complex located approximately 25 kilometers (16 mi) west of Monywa and 10 kilometers (6.2 mi) southeast of Yinmabin, in Yinmabin Township, Monywa District, Sagaing Region, Northern Burma (Myanmar). It is located on the western bank of the Chindwin River. The name of the complex means Mountain of Isolated Solitary Meditation.
Phowintaung 1 is a vast complex of over 900 caves, many of which are elaborately decorated with paintings and statues of the Lord Buddha. The caves are carved into a sandstone outcrop and contain numerous carved Buddha statues and mural paintings of geometric patterns and Jataka stories.
