Built in the 18th century by King Gyurmed Namgyal, Phodong Monastery originally belonged to the Karma Kagyu sect of Tibetan Buddhism. An older monastery existed at the site before the current structure. Sadly, an earthquake damaged the original building. In 1977, the lamas rebuilt the monastery with support from the government, making it grander than before.
