The Patna Sahib Gurudwara, also known as Takht Sri Harimandir Ji, is a revered Sikh pilgrimage site located in Patna, Bihar, India. It is one of the five takhts, or the highest seats of authority, of Sikhism.
Historical Significance
The Patna Sahib Gurudwara holds immense significance for Sikhs as it was the birthplace of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru, in 1666. Guru Gobind Singh Ji spent his first ten years here before moving to Anandpur. The Gurdwara is regarded as the epicentre of Sikhism in Eastern India.
The construction of the Takht is traced back to the 19th century. A great devotee of Guru Nanak, Salis Rai Johri converted his haveli (a mansion) into a Dharamshala (a rest house for pilgrims) where Guru Teg Bahadur Ji, the ninth Sikh Guru, also stayed. This is the same place where the present-day Patna Sahib Gurudwara is situated.
Architecture
The Patna Sahib Gurudwara is a beautiful blend of Mughal and Rajput architectural styles, reflecting the region's rich cultural heritage. The Gurdwara complex is sprawling and consists of a Sarovar (holy pool), a Langar (community kitchen), and a museum that houses historical artifacts and relics related to Guru Gobind Singh Ji's life.
Visiting the Patna Sahib Gurudwara
The Patna Sahib Gurudwara is open to visitors of all faiths. However, there is a dress code that needs to be followed by all visitors. Men and women are required to cover their heads and knees. Visitors can also partake in the langar, the community kitchen, which serves free vegetarian meals to everyone.
Timings
The Patna Sahib Gurudwara is open all days of the week from dawn to dusk. Special prayer ceremonies are held throughout the day, and visitors can participate in these if they wish.
