Nestled around 25 kilometers from Leh town on the Leh-Kargil highway, Pathar Sahib Gurudwara is a revered Sikh pilgrimage site. Built in honor of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism, the gurudwara is steeped in history and spiritual significance.
Legends and Significance:
As per tradition, Guru Nanak Dev Ji visited Ladakh during his travels between 1515-1518 AD. While meditating here, a demon attempted to harm him with a giant boulder. Miraculously, the boulder softened and transformed, imprinting the Guru's form. This hallowed rock, a symbol of Guru Nanak's divine intervention, is housed within the gurudwara complex.
The Gurudwara Experience:
The gurudwara itself is a beautiful sight, offering a tranquil atmosphere amidst the stunning Himalayan backdrop. Visitors can pay their respects at the sacred rock, marvel at the architecture, and experience the Sikh tradition of langar – the community kitchen serving free meals to all.
Beyond the Gurudwara:
Stepping outside the gurudwara, you'll find stairs leading to a meditation spot called Tap Isthaan, offering a serene space for reflection. Across the gurudwara, a Nishaan Sahib, a tall flagpole, marks the spot where the legendary boulder is said to have transformed.
Visiting Pathar Sahib Gurudwara:
Pathar Sahib Gurudwara is easily accessible by car or taxi from Leh. The gurudwara is open to all visitors, regardless of faith. Remember to dress modestly (covering shoulders and knees) as a sign of respect when entering the gurudwara.
This pilgrimage site offers a unique blend of history, spirituality, and breathtaking landscapes, making it a worthwhile stop on your Ladakh itinerary.
