The Military Mahadev Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located on Camp Road in Belgaum, Karnataka, India. Built and maintained by the Indian Army, it's one of the city's most prominent landmarks.
History and Significance
The foundation stone of the Military Mahadev Temple was laid in 1954 and inaugurated in 1955 by Lieutenant General S.M. Shrinagesh, the General Officer and Commander-in-Chief of the Southern Command. The temple has undergone renovations over the years, but the new dome retains the original architectural style.
The temple is known for its cleanliness and serenity. It's a popular pilgrimage site for devotees, especially during the festival of Maha Shivaratri.
What to Expect
The temple is situated amidst a beautiful garden, creating a peaceful ambiance. Inside the sanctum sanctorum, you'll find a large black Shivalinga (the symbolic representation of Lord Shiva) sheltered by a seven-hooded serpent. Two Nandi idols (the bull, the mount of Lord Shiva) stand guard in front of the Shivalinga.
The intricate carvings on the temple walls are reminiscent of those found in South Indian temples.
