About the Mahabaleshwar Temple
The Mahabaleshwar Temple is an important pilgrimage site for Hindus, especially in South India. It is said to be as significant as Kashi (Varanasi) and is known as Dakshin Kashi or South Kashi. The temple is believed to have been built around the 4th century CE and features the classical Dravidian architectural style.
The Significance of the Atmalinga
The most revered part of the temple is the Atmalinga or the Pranalinga, which is a six-foot-tall Shiva Linga. Legend says that this Linga emerged from the body of Lord Shiva himself. Only the top portion of the Atmalinga is visible to devotees.

Planning Your Visit
The Mahabaleshwar Temple is open from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. There is no entrance fee, but proper attire is expected of all visitors (avoid jeans, trousers, or shorts).
Festivals
The Maha Shivaratri festival is a particularly important time to visit the temple, as it is one of the most crowded and celebratory days of the year.
How to Get There
The closest domestic airport is Dabolim Airport in Goa, which is roughly 140 kilometers away from Gokarna. From Dabolim, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to Gokarna. The Gokarna Main Bus Stand is about 8 kilometers from the temple.
If you are travelling by train, the nearest major railway station is Gokarna Road Station, which is 14 kilometers from the temple. From here, you can hire a taxi or rickshaw to reach the temple.
