The Holy House of Mercy, also known as Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Macau, is a historic and iconic landmark in Macau, China. It stands on the left side of Senado Square, one of the city's most vibrant and picturesque areas.
History:
Founded in 1569 by Bishop Belchior Carneiro, the Holy House of Mercy was the first Western-style charitable institution in Asia. It was established to provide assistance to the poor, the sick, and the orphaned, and it quickly became a vital part of the community.
Over the centuries, the Holy House of Mercy expanded its services to include a hospital, an orphanage, a leper colony, and a home for the elderly. It also played a significant role in education and culture, establishing schools and libraries.
Architecture:
The building itself is a two-story stone and brick structure with a neoclassical façade. It features arched windows, a colonnade, and a balcony, and is painted white to reflect the sunlight. The interior is equally impressive, with a grand staircase, ornate ceilings, and beautiful murals.
Museum:
In 2001, the Holy House of Mercy opened a museum that showcases its rich history and heritage. The museum houses a collection of religious artifacts, including sculptures, paintings, and manuscripts. It also features exhibits on the social welfare work of the Holy House of Mercy and its impact on Macau.
Visiting the Holy House of Mercy:
The Holy House of Mercy is open to the public daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Admission is free, and there are guided tours available in English and Portuguese.
