Grace Episcopal Church, also known as Grace Place, is a historic Episcopal church located in the Printer's Row neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. It is the second oldest Episcopal congregation in the city, having been founded in 1851.
History:
The church has a rich history, having occupied six different locations throughout its existence. The original church building was a wooden structure located at Dearborn and Madison Streets. Over the years, the church moved several times, and its buildings were destroyed by both the Great Chicago Fire in 1871 and a subsequent fire in 1915. In 1985, the congregation moved to its current location at 637 South Dearborn Street, in a former printing works building.
Architecture:
The current church building is a late 19th-century Arts and Crafts style structure that was originally a printing works. The building was renovated in the 1980s to create a worship space on the second and third floors, while the first floor was converted into a community center. The sanctuary is notable for its two-story-high space and the way it incorporates the building's original wooden support posts. The renovation work received an award from the Chicago AIA chapter in 1989.
