The Ewaso Ng'iro River is the ecological lifeline of Samburu National Reserve. Flowing through an otherwise semi-arid landscape, it supports riverine woodland and provides essential water for elephants, antelopes, predators and abundant birdlife. The river also forms the natural boundary between Samburu and Buffalo Springs national reserves.
Visitors usually experience the river from designated viewpoints, lodges or guided game drives rather than as a separate walk. Wildlife often gathers along its banks in the dry season, but water levels and animal activity change with rainfall. Remain inside the vehicle where required, keep a safe distance from the banks and follow the instructions of reserve rangers or guides.
