Nestled amidst the rolling hills on the outskirts of Shillong, Meghalaya, India, Elephant Falls is a cascading beauty that beckons nature lovers and sightseers alike. While some sources say it's a three-tiered wonder, most agree it's a majestic two-tier waterfall.
The original Khasi name, Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew, translates to "The Three Step Waterfalls," reflecting the cascading nature of the falls. The British, however, named it Elephant Falls due to a large rock formation resembling an elephant near the base. Sadly, this rock was washed away in an earthquake over a century ago.
Despite the missing elephant, the falls remain a captivating sight. The mountain stream plunges through lush greenery, creating two successive falls surrounded by fern-covered rocks. A paved path with viewing areas allows visitors to appreciate the falls from different vantage points. There are even benches where you can relax and soak in the sounds and serenity of the cascading water.
Reaching Elephant Falls is a breeze. Located about 12 kilometers from Shillong city center, it's easily accessible by car or taxi. A small sign near Shillong Peak points you to a road leading to the falls. There's a nominal entry fee, with an additional charge for photography.
While swimming is not allowed for safety reasons, you can wade into the refreshing pool at the base of the falls for a cool dip on a hot day. Don't forget to capture this picturesque spot on camera!
