Chinmaya Ganadhish: A Colossus of Devotion in Kolhapur
Located about 14 kilometers from Kolhapur on the Pune-Bangalore highway, Chinmaya Ganadhish is a pilgrimage site unlike any other. It boasts the title of the tallest statue of the Hindu god Ganesha in the world.
Enshrined within the Chinmaya Sandeepany Ashram, this colossal marvel stands tall at 61 feet, perched atop a 24-foot meditation hall. The circular structure has a diameter of a whopping 60 feet, and the entire monument weighs a staggering 800 tonnes!
Construction involved the meticulous work of 50 skilled artisans who toiled for a year to complete this masterpiece. Unveiled in 2001 by spiritual leader Swami Chinmayanandaji, the idol is crafted from cement, iron rods, clay, and plaster of Paris. It depicts Lord Ganesha seated regally on a five-headed snake, radiating an aura of serenity and power.
The sheer size of the statue is enough to leave you awestruck. Devotees flock to the temple for daily worship and aarti, with particularly high footfalls during the ten-day Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations, when over 5,000 devotees throng the temple to seek blessings from the beloved elephant god.
If you're looking for a spiritual expedition coupled with architectural grandeur, Chinmaya Ganadhish is a must-visit on your Kolhapur itinerary.
