Chanderi Fort: A Hike with a View near Panvel
Chanderi Fort, perched atop the Sahyadri mountains in the Matheran range, beckons trekkers with a challenging ascent and a rewarding panorama. Though not much is known about the fort's history, it offers a unique glimpse into the past and a chance to commune with nature.
Reaching the Peak:
There are two main trails leading up to Chanderi Fort, both offering a moderate to challenging trek:
- Tamsai Village Trail: This 20 km route from Panvel is shorter but steeper.
- Chinchavali Village Trail: This route, starting near Badlapur, is longer but considered slightly easier.
Both paths wind through dense forests, with the Tamsai route featuring some rock patches. While the trails are generally well-marked by trekkers, consulting locals for directions is always a good idea.
The Fort and the Views:
Despite its historical significance, Chanderi Fort lies in ruins. However, remnants of water cisterns and partially broken steps hint at its past. The true reward lies at the summit, where you'll be treated to breathtaking views of the surrounding forts, including Prabalgad, Nakind, and Matheran, and the majestic Western Ghats stretching out in the distance.
A Perfect Day Trip:
The Chanderi Fort trek is a perfect day trip from Mumbai, Pune, or nearby areas. Plan for a full day, as the trek itself can take several hours. Be sure to pack plenty of water, snacks, and good hiking shoes, The views from the top and the satisfaction of conquering the climb will make it all worthwhile.
