An Intricate Gem in Aihole
Chakra Gudi, a 9th-century temple, is a must-see on your exploration of Aihole's historical sites. Located on the southern end of the Durga Temple Complex, it's a short walk from the main Aihole Bus Stand (around 300 meters) and just 200 meters south of the Durga Temple itself.
Dedicated to Shiva
Though some sources say it's a Vishnu temple, Chakra Gudi is primarily known as a Shiva temple. Step into the east-facing structure and admire the two main sections: the sanctum (inner sanctum) and the ranga mandapa (hall).
Exquisite Carvings
Look out for the temple's unique features:
- The doorway of the sanctum is adorned with 20 intricate carvings depicting amorous couples.
- The lintel above the sanctum showcases a captivating image of Garuda, the divine bird vehicle of Lord Vishnu, holding two snakes.
- The tower above the sanctum, called the shikhara, is built in the Nagara style, characterized by its pyramidal structure.
- The name Chakra Gudi comes from the amalaka, a decorative disc-like stone ornament crowning the shikhara.
Peaceful Surroundings
Next to the temple is a pushkarini, a traditional temple tank, adding a serene touch to the site.
Planning Your Visit
The temple is open from 9 AM to 5 PM. There's a nominal entry fee of Rs. 5, with an additional Rs. 25 for taking photos inside.
