The Cavalry Tank Museum is a must-visit for any history or military buff visiting Ahmednagar, Maharashtra, India. It is the only museum of its kind in Asia and houses about 50 exhibits of vintage armored fighting vehicles.
The museum was established in February 1994 by the Armored Corps Centre and School. It is spread over a large area with lush green lawns, where the tanks are displayed . The museum's collection includes tanks from World War II, the Indo-Pakistani Wars, and the Cold War.
Some of the notable exhibits include:
- The Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Armored Car, the oldest armored vehicle in the museum, which dates back to 1914.
- The Vijayanta Tank, the pride of the Indian Army.
- Tanks captured from Pakistan in the Indo-Pakistani Wars, such as the M47 Patton medium tank, the Chaffee light tank, and the M41 Walker Bulldog light tank.
- An Indian AMX-13 light tank and a PT-76 amphibious tank.
The museum also has a "Memory Hill" where souvenirs of all regiments of the Indian Army's Armoured Corps are kept.
The Cavalry Tank Museum is open on all days of the week (except Mondays) from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Entry fees are nominal. It is a great place to learn about the history of armored warfare in India and around the world.
