The Burigosain Devalay, also referred to as Burhi Gosani Devalaya, is a renowned temple situated in the heart of Jorhat, Assam, India. It is a Shakta temple dedicated to the Goddess Durga, also known as Burigosain or Burhi Gosani, which translates to "Old Goddess" in Assamese.
The temple holds historical significance as well. The idol enshrined within the temple was brought to Assam by the Ahom king Rudra Singha from the Jaintia hills of Meghalaya. Later, in 1794, Ahom king Gaurinath Singha shifted the capital from Rangpur to Jorhat and relocated the idol to its present location, establishing the Burhi Gosani Devalaya .
The temple complex houses the sanctum sanctorum of Burigosain along with an idol of a priest. It is believed that both the idols were brought from Jayantiya and first established in Rangpur before being moved to Jorhat.
The Burigosain Devalay is revered by people from all over the region and is a popular tourist spot. The annual Durga Puja celebrations witness a large gathering of devotees. During this time, the temple is beautifully decorated and special pujas are performed. If you plan to visit during this festival, be prepared for crowds.
