The Billeshwar Temple, also known as Belsor Temple, is an ancient Hindu temple located in Belsor village, Nalbari district, Assam, India. Believed to be around 500 years old, the temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna.
According to a legend, a priest once owned a cow that refused to give him milk. The priest followed the cow one day and saw it offering its milk to a bush. When the king learned about this, he ordered the site to be dug up. A Shivlinga, a representation of the Hindu god Shiva, was discovered beneath the ground. The king then constructed a temple on the same location, but dedicated it to Lord Krishna. The area where the Shivlinga was discovered was formerly known as Birreshwar, which eventually transformed into Billeswar and finally Belsor.
The Billeshwar Temple is a popular pilgrimage destination, particularly during Durga Puja and Maha Shiv Ratri. Buffalo sacrifice is a traditional practice performed during Durga Puja at this temple.
