Babur's Masjid, also known as Kabuli Bagh Mosque, is an architectural marvel located in the heart of Karnal, Haryana, India. Built by the Mughal emperor Babur in 1528 to commemorate his victory over Ibrahim Lodhi at the First Battle of Panipat, the mosque stands as a testament to the era's architectural prowess.
The mosque is a blend of local Indian and Mughal architectural styles. The main prayer hall measures 53.75 meters by 16.5 meters and is crowned by a high dome. The mosque originally had three octagonal towers with domes flanking the central dome, but only one survives today. The mosque is enclosed by two massive parallel walls.
Within the mosque grounds, you'll also find a deep well that, remarkably, still provides cool and fresh water. A stone tablet with Persian inscription mentions that the mosque was built by an architect named Mir Baqi.
Though the once-stunning gardens surrounding the mosque have disappeared over time, Babur's Masjid remains a historically significant and visually impressive landmark in Karnal. It's a perfect place to step back in time and appreciate the beauty of Mughal architecture.
