The 9/11 Memorial & Museum is a place of remembrance and reflection, honoring the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. It is located at the World Trade Center in New York City, the site of the former Twin Towers.
The Memorial
The Memorial is a tribute to the 2,977 people killed in the attacks of September 11, 2001 and the six people killed in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. The names of every person who died in these attacks are inscribed on bronze panels surrounding the Memorial's twin reflecting pools.
The pools are each nearly an acre in size and feature the largest man-made waterfalls in North America. The water cascades down 1 30 feet into the pools, creating a powerful visual symbol of the lives lost.
Around the pools are groves of swamp white oak trees, creating a peaceful and contemplative space. The Survivor Tree, a Callery pear tree that survived the attacks, stands as a symbol of resilience and hope.
The Museum
The Museum is located beneath the Memorial and tells the story of 9/11 through artifacts, personal stories, and interactive exhibits.
The Museum's collection includes artifacts such as the Last Column, a 36-foot-tall steel beam that was the last piece of debris removed from Ground Zero, and a damaged fire truck from the New York City Fire Department.
Exhibits explore the events of 9/11, the stories of the victims, and the aftermath of the attacks. The Museum also examines the history of the World Trade Center and the 1993 bombing.
Visiting the Memorial & Museum
The Memorial is free and open to the public daily. The Museum requires tickets, which can be purchased online or at the museum.
Visitors are encouraged to allow ample time for their visit, as there is much to see and experience. The Memorial and Museum are both moving and powerful places, and visitors may need time to process what they have seen.
