Nurota, also spelled Nurata, is a historic town in Uzbekistan's Navoiy Region near the Nurota Mountains. The town is associated with a sacred spring, religious buildings and the remains of an old fortress, while the surrounding district provides access to mountain villages, desert-edge landscapes and the Nurota nature reserve.
Nurota works well as a stop between Uzbekistan's major Silk Road cities or as a base for a slower rural excursion. Sites beyond town are dispersed and may require an arranged driver or local guide. Travelers entering protected areas should confirm permits and follow conservation rules, particularly around wildlife habitat. Summers are hot and exposed, so water and sun protection are essential. Respectful clothing and conduct are expected at pilgrimage sites and active religious buildings.
